Substance Abuse Prevention

FOCUS/Substance Abuse Prevention Team Goal:

To prevent problems, including injuries, associated with alcohol and other drug abuse.

FOCUS/Substance Abuse Prevention Team Secondary Goal:

The prevention of injuries associated with the inappropriate use of alcohol.

  FOCUS/Substance Abuse Prevention Team Targets:

Families, children, adults, seniors, with a special emphasis on preventing alcohol and other drug abuse among youth.

What is Substance Abuse Prevention Team locally?:

Together with the Northwestern Health Unit (Fort Frances) and other community-based agencies and volunteers, the development and implementation of alcohol and other drug abuse prevention projects are being created to meet the needs of the community.

Based on the experiences of the FOCUS Community Demonstration Project (see www.frcentre.net for further information), the Healthy Lifestyles Project, as well as national and international studies, FOCUS-based communities are encouraged to implement programs that have been shown to represent promising approaches to the prevention of alcohol and other drug abuse.

Nature of the Problem:

According to the Ministry of Health Promotions, "Alcohol and other drugs affect the lives of at least 74% of Ontarians at a cost of an estimated $9.2 billion per year in health care, law enforcement, and lost labour productivity. Alcohol use alone accounts for about one-half of these costs. It is estimated that 10% of all deaths in Ontario are the result, directly or indirectly, of alcohol."

Local Substance Abuse Prevention Team Goals Will Be Met By:

-ensuring broad-based community involvement

-using comprehensive, population-based approaches

-using evidence-based interventions (i.e. best practices) -integrating interventions so that they build upon one another to maximize resources

-incorporating program monitoring and evaluation

 Ministry of Health Promotions Role:
"The Ministry of Health Promotions is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the FOCUS Community Program (S.A.P.T. locally), providing and administering funding, ensuring accountability of the program, monitoring and reporting on progress, evaluation and reviewing and approving activity plans and budgets, as well as annual activity and financial progress reports to ensure local projects meet Ministry expectations."
